The use of song….this should be a short subject in Christianity. Christians have used this art form for thousands of years.
But something needs to be said about this. With the SPIRIT of GOD leading, a song can bring in the presence of GOD in a special way. Used in a production, a song can set as a center piece of your work. It ties in spiritual, and physical, emotional and intellectual (depending on the song of course),
For example I once asked permission of a certain Christian Artist if I could re-write his lyrics to include an Easter theme. Permission was given and we recorded a demo track of our own musicians. Two different singers have sang this song (Look Unto The LAMB) in our production JESUS: Name Above All Names and we have always gotten positive feedback about it.
A song can be included in a solo live performance, with dancers, with mimes, in a video, etc….I have one song that a singer will perform while a video runs in the background and dancers dance. So what we did was create the video as an AVI file with the soundtrack of the song attached to the video. It was played through EasyWorship (our church’s projection software) and three elements of drama ran simultaneously together. What made it work was eliminating the extra timing glitch of having to start the CD and video in synch.
Here is the background video and audio track of that segment. The song is “Take Me In” and the blurriness of the background video was on purpose to give a surreal feeling as the lyrical content was about the Holy of Holies.
With today’s technology really the only limit is your imagination.
I like to include one really powerful song, or a song most are familiar with as well as some I have written myself. In fact, we even performed one song without music…..intentionally. It was one of the most moving sequences we have done.
Use songs with lyrics, be creative and honor GOD in CHRIST’s name.

I agree. As a youth pastor songs and videos have such a huge effect on the message that I am teaching. I love when students walk away thinking about my song and the message.
