Please see the post Drama!Drama!Drama! for the beginning of this series.
Now here is a concept – the use of message in your art.
This has been going as long as there has been art. What message are you passionate about? What message is important to get out?
As a CHRISTian, the message Iwant to get out is that JESUS is real and not just some story in a book. I want the world to know that JESUS has a plan of redemption for a fallen world that led through a cross, and that plan was validated when HE was risen from death on our behalf.
I think it is important to portray the Gospel in church drama, however, does every drama need the whole Gospel story in it? Well the question fits in many media categories. Does every song sung by a Christian need to sing the Gospel? That does not happen. We have songs about such random things as coffee shops, being weird or just feeling blue. Then we have songs about abortion, and hot political buttons, and then we have heart felt moving stories about warriors returning home and all of the kiss songs that just do not portray a direct Christian Gospel message – ALL OF THIS within a framework we call Christian music.
Well drama can be no different. It is driven by the creator of the drama as to its content. But I say we have a responsibility to tell the world about JESUS in a way so unique and thought provoking that it just can not be ignored. With such passion that it is felt, with such precision and excellence that it cannot be spoken against, with enough flash and dazzle to keep interest, but MOST IMPORTANTLY it should be the story that the HOLY SPIRIT leads you to tell.
We have at our church one story that is strictly JESUS during the Easter season. Then we tell a story of a homeless man who has ruined his life and cares for no one. There will be others of Noah, and of dreams of hell and anything else the LORD leads.
This is what we should feel charged to do. Make significance your goal. Don’t make being the best over someone else, or compete with another local congregation that our production was biggest. Just tell significant stories through drama and them rooted in CHRIST.
Our pastor once said that the one thing you should strive to be is significant. To count in this day and time to make a difference.
So make your drama significant by rooting it all in the most Significant story ever told in any kind of drama: JESUS CHRIST.
